Salon Orchestra

The Salon Orchestra started out life in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra some 15 years ago or so with the then Principal players of the day. It was established as an antidote to the intense repertoire experienced daily and to re create the family concert that people can enjoy with absolute confidence. Melody and tunes going hand in hand with fun games and presentation.

The first Artistic Director was the legendary broadcaster Neville Garden whose turn of phrase enthralled each and every listener.
There is a history to the Salon Orchestra, the Pier Orchestra or the Palm Court Orchestra. Pre Radio, at the turn of last century and during the late Victorian period and Edwardian era, it was often used to advertise large scale works with clever informed arrangements, rather like the function of a pop video today. It is these transcripted arrangements that have survived and are now nurtured by The Salon Orchestra.

Don't be surprised to see a Rossini Overture mixing with a Lehar Valse or a Gilbert and Sullivan Operatic ditty shaking hands with an Italian ballad and for good measure add a dash of Scots Song and a Music Hall joke.

The music can cover a couple of centuries ................the jokes, I regret are even older!
